MOOC – Virtual Hackathon
Chapter 1 – What a hackathon is / Sustainable Development Goals & Just Transition
Esther Rüßler, city2science
This chapter gives an overview of the hackathon format: its origin and concept, its process and the framework and values that underpin a hackathon. The second lesson dives deeper into what the Sustainable Development Goals are about and explains the concept of Just Transition. Both are essential for the virtual hackathon concept.
Lesson 1: What a hackathon is
The lesson offers a definition of what a hackathon is, especially in the context of the virtual hackathon project. Here the word “hacking” is used for tackling societal challenges with inventive solutions.
The first lesson also gives an overview on the methodology the virtual hackathons follow. Through the virtual hackathon roadmap organisers of hackathons can get support in what tools to use to facilitate each of the three phases of the methodology.
Finally, the lesson shows what the Sustainable Development Goals are. They serve as the key framework all virtual hackathons reference to tackling a challenge that is connected to at least one of the Sustainable Development Goals. These will be explained more in detail in lesson 2.
Lesson 2. Sustainable Development Goals and Just Transition
Lesson 2 explains when the Sustainable Development Goals were developed and why. It also shows how the 17 goals are interconnected and what relationship they have with science and society as a whole.
The second half of the lesson is about the concept of Just Transition. It explains when it originated and how it evolved to being tied to transitions that are connected to the climate crisis. Through an example the lesson also shows more concretely how Just Transition could be applied practically.
